When Frank E. Campbell founded the Frank E. Campbell Burial and Cremation Company in
1898, he changed the way people thought about funeral service. At the time, most
funerals were conducted in private homes, but New York was becoming a city of
apartment dwellers; people no longer had room to host such large events.
Frank Campbell also saw an opportunity to relieve grieving families of the
details of preparing their homes for so many visitors. His funeral home would
answer that need. On that premise, Frank Campbell founded what was then known
as "The Funeral Church."...
He created an atmosphere of peace and beauty with soft lighting, quality furniture,
tapestries, potted palms and art objects.
In
this serene atmosphere, Frank Campbell instilled in his staff an understanding
of the value of courteous service and attention to detail, provided to all client
families regardless of social or financial standing, religion or ethnicity.
This remains our guiding precept.
Over the years we have had the privilege of serving many Heads of State, United
Nations Ambassadors, Dignitaries, Royalty of many nations, members of the arts
and entertainment world, and families from all walks of life. Many languages
have been spoken here, honoring the deceased and comforting their families.
Service styles have varied from the most formal funeral mass to services featuring
a single work of art or, once, an airplane tire. Some services have consisted
of little more than a lovely musical recital. Each service honors a unique individual
who has lived life in his or her own style.
